India’s EV Sector Gets a Major Boost in Budget 2025
In a major move to boost the electric vehicle (EV) sector, the Indian government has announced sweeping measures in the 2025 Budget to reduce costs and encourage local manufacturing. One of the most notable changes is the removal of basic customs duty (BCD) on key minerals used in lithium-ion batteries, which power most electric vehicles today. This strategic decision is expected to lower production costs for EVs, making them more affordable for consumers.

The central government has also taken steps to enhance the availability of essential materials like cobalt powder, lithium-ion battery scrap, lead, zinc, and 12 other critical minerals. By eliminating the customs duties on these items, the government is aiming to streamline battery manufacturing in India. This will not only help in reducing the cost of electric vehicles and mobile phone batteries but will also play a role in creating more local jobs for the youth in the rapidly growing EV and battery manufacturing sector.
