  • OHM Global Mobility signs agreement for buses and infrastructure.
  • Volvo buses to be replaced on key routes.

Bengaluru: In a significant step towards greener public transport, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has officially launched the city’s first-ever fleet of air-conditioned electric buses. The initiative is part of the ongoing efforts to modernize the city’s public transportation system and reduce carbon emissions.

As part of the plan, a total of 320 electric buses will be gradually rolled out on Bengaluru’s key routes. The buses are expected to replace older models and provide better comfort for commuters, while also contributing to the city’s goal of adopting sustainable transport solutions.

BMTC has partnered with OHM Global Mobility, a private firm, under the GCC model to supply these buses. The buses will be deployed in phases and will also serve the Kempegowda International Airport route, replacing the older Volvo buses. This move is in response to the growing number of passengers at the airport and aims to provide a more eco-friendly option for the daily commuters.

Speaking to TNIE, BMTC’s Chief Traffic Manager (Operations), G.T. Prabhakar Reddy, highlighted that while BMTC has already been operating several electric buses, these are the first air-conditioned models. “With this new partnership, BMTC will receive air-conditioned electric buses along with charging infrastructure and drivers provided by the private company. BMTC will provide conductors and will pay the firm ₹65.8 per kilometer for the service,” Reddy added.

Currently, five electric buses are undergoing trial runs, and the plan is to integrate more AC electric buses into routes, particularly those that cover Bengaluru’s technology corridors.

According to Reddy, a significant portion of these buses will be dedicated to the airport route, where the older Volvo buses will gradually be phased out and reassigned to other routes in the city. This move is expected to enhance the airport’s connectivity while ensuring minimal environmental impact.

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability and improving commuter experience, BMTC’s collaboration with OHM Global Mobility is a crucial step in transforming Bengaluru’s public transport into a greener, more efficient network.
