Heavy Rains Lash Karnataka, Holidays Declared for Schools and Colleges

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued red and orange alerts across several Karnataka districts. With heavy rains expected until August 24, authorities have declared school and college holidays in multiple regions.

Bengaluru : The monsoon has once again intensified across Karnataka, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue heavy rain alerts in several districts. The weather department has predicted rainfall across coastal, north interior, and south interior regions of the state until August 24.
As a precautionary step, district administrations have announced holidays for schools and colleges in multiple regions. Kodagu district administration declared a holiday for Anganwadi centers, schools, and colleges on August 19 after an orange alert was issued. Similarly, in Chikkamagaluru, District Commissioner Meena Nagaraj ordered a closure for educational institutions across taluks such as Mudigere, Sringeri, Koppa, and Tarikere due to heavy rainfall warnings.
In Belagavi, District Commissioner Mohammad Roshan announced holidays for schools and colleges in seven taluks including Bailhongal, Khanapur, Ramdurg, and Chikkodi. Dharwad district also declared a holiday for all Anganwadis, primary schools, high schools, and PU colleges, citing the safety and health of students.
The situation is no different in Uttara Kannada, where schools and PU colleges across 11 taluks have been closed following orders from District Commissioner Lakshmeepriya. Meanwhile, Hassan district has also declared a closure in Sakleshpur, Arakalgudu, Belur, and Alur taluks.
According to the IMD, wind speeds between 30–40 kmph are expected along the coastal belt and adjoining interior regions on August 19. The weather department has issued a red alert for Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga districts, while an orange alert is in place for Dakshina Kannada, Belagavi, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Hassan, and Kodagu. Several other districts including Bagalkot, Yadgir, Ballari, and Davangere remain under a yellow alert.
With the rain showing no signs of slowing down, officials have urged residents, especially those living near riverbanks like the Cauvery basin, to remain cautious. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure public safety.
