Karnataka Braces for Heavy Rains as Bengaluru Set for Week-Long Showers

The weather department has issued a forecast of widespread rainfall across Karnataka, warning of possible floods, roadblocks, and river overflows as Bengaluru is expected to see continuous rain this week.

  • Karnataka braces for heavy monsoon rains and flood risks
  • Bengaluru likely to receive showers for five straight days
  • Several districts declare school holidays amid rising river levels

Bengaluru : Karnataka is on alert as heavy rains triggered by a depression over the Bay of Bengal are set to lash the state this week. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of widespread downpours on August 19 and 20, while cloudy skies may linger until the month’s end. Bengaluru is expected to face at least five days of showers, creating traffic concerns and waterlogging risks.

Flood-like situations are already being reported in northern districts. In Belagavi, multiple bridges have been submerged, cutting off access to several villages. With Maharashtra increasing water discharge from its reservoirs, the Krishna river has crossed danger levels, causing severe flooding in Chikkodi taluk. At least 16 flood-hit villages have lost road connectivity, while more than eight bridges remain under water.

The situation in Malprabha and Ghataprabha river basins has worsened, recording inflows of nearly 67,000 and 38,000 cusecs respectively. As a precaution, authorities have issued high alerts in Hukkeri taluk and surrounding areas, urging residents along riverbanks to move to safer zones.

Meanwhile, the Kodagu, Malnad, and coastal belts are witnessing intense monsoon activity. Continuous rainfall has forced district administrations to declare holidays for schools, anganwadis, and PU colleges in Belagavi, Savadatti, Bailhongal, Kittur, Ramdurg, Khanapur, and Hukkeri taluks. Farmers in Mandya have been cautioned against venturing near riverbanks for agricultural work or grazing livestock.

While rains are expected to weaken slightly after August 21, officials caution that relief may be temporary. The last week of the month could bring a shift to drier, hotter conditions, but until then Karnataka remains firmly under the grip of the monsoon.
