Bengaluru: DK Shivakumar Says Water Tariff Hike Essential to Save BWSSB

Bengaluru’s drinking water tariff hasn't increased in 11 years. BWSSS loses about ₹1,000 crore annually, and expanding the water network will require an investment of ₹6,000 crore. Immediate action is needed.

Bengaluru : Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has stated that the water tariff hike is inevitable to keep the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) afloat. Speaking to the media after an event at the KPCC office on Thursday, he explained that the cost of drinking water in Bengaluru hasn’t been increased in the past 11 years, despite the BWSSB losing around ₹1,000 crore annually.

Furthermore, there is an urgent need to expand the city’s water supply network, which would require an investment of approximately ₹6,000 crore. To address these challenges, he stressed the need to take immediate action, which includes raising water tariffs.

Shivakumar also touched upon another matter at the event, expressing concern about the BJP’s efforts to undermine the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. He pointed out that while the BJP might disagree with Gandhi’s ideologies, their actions contradict the values he promoted, including non-violence and the Swadeshi movement.

The Deputy CM highlighted how, under Gandhi’s leadership, the Congress brought freedom to India, and that the BJP has contributed nothing to the country’s independence.

Additionally, Shivakumar emphasized that the state government is planning to hold year-round events across the state under the “Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Constitution” banner to promote Gandhi’s messages and teachings.

He mentioned that the government’s initiative to celebrate Gandhi’s ideals would be formally outlined in the upcoming budget session, and he had already urged the AICC president for support in this regard.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, speaking after garlanding the statue of Gandhi at the Vidhana Soudha, remarked that although Nathuram Godse may have killed Mahatma Gandhi, no one can destroy his values. He reiterated that Gandhiji’s principles continue to remain alive today, and they will always guide the nation.
