No Third-Party Insurance? No Petrol for Your Vehicle

Third-Party Insurance Now Mandatory for All Vehicles - Without It, You Won’t Be Able to Refuel or Use FASTag! Know the Rules, Fines, and Why You Need Insurance Today.

  • Mandatory Insurance: Third-party insurance required for all vehicles.
  • No Fuel: Without insurance, you can’t refuel at petrol stations.
  • Penalties: Fines or jail time for driving without third-party insurance.

Why You Need Third-Party Insurance for Your Vehicle

According to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1998, every vehicle must have third-party insurance (or third-party liability insurance). This insurance protects individuals from any losses caused to a third party in the event of an accident. It’s a legal requirement to ensure the safety and financial protection of others on the road.

However, millions of vehicles continue to operate without insurance, and the government has now taken serious action to address this. Starting soon, anyone driving a vehicle without third-party insurance will face major consequences.

What Happens If You Don’t Have Insurance?

In an important move, the government has announced that vehicles without third-party insurance will not be allowed to refuel at any petrol station. Yes, you read that right—without the mandatory insurance, you won’t be able to fill your tank, making your vehicle practically unusable. Additionally, you won’t be able to pass through FASTag lanes, and doing so could result in a hefty fine.

This new policy aims to enforce vehicle insurance compliance and ensure that all vehicles on the road are legally covered. Reports have shown that while there are around 30-40 crore vehicles on Indian roads, only about 50% of them are insured under third-party coverage.

Why Is Third-Party Insurance Essential?

Vehicle insurance typically falls into three categories: First-Party Insurance, Third-Party Insurance, and Comprehensive Insurance.

  1. First-Party Insurance covers the vehicle owner’s losses.
  2. Third-Party Insurance provides coverage for damages caused to others by your vehicle.
  3. Comprehensive Insurance combines both First-Party and Third-Party coverage.

Third-party insurance ensures that if your vehicle causes an accident, the third party involved receives compensation. Without it, you’ll face severe legal consequences.

Consequences of Driving Without Insurance

Currently, if you’re caught driving without third-party insurance, you can face a ₹2,000 fine or a three-month jail sentence. If you repeat the offense, the penalty increases, making it crucial to comply with this law to avoid escalating fines or even imprisonment.

It’s clear – third-party insurance is not optional. Ensure your vehicle is properly covered to avoid unnecessary hassles on the road.
