Key Announcements in Union Budget for Education Sector

The Union Budget 2025, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has made crucial allocations aimed at enhancing India’s education landscape. With an increased focus on both higher education and skill development, the budget places special emphasis on expanding opportunities for students across fields.

The total budget allocation for education stands at ₹1.28 lakh crore, marking an increase from the previous year. Specifically, ₹50,067 crore has been earmarked for higher education, while ₹78,572 crore is designated for school education.

A major highlight is the announcement of increasing the number of medical seats by 75,000 over the next five years. This is expected to ease the shortage of medical professionals and provide more opportunities for aspiring doctors. Additionally, 6,500 new seats will be created in five new IITs that have been established since 2014, further expanding access to world-class technical education.

In line with the government’s aim to encourage research, 10,000 fellowships will be provided to students in IITs and IISERs in the next five years. To cater to the increasing demand for digital education, 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs will be established in government schools to foster scientific thinking and innovation among students. Moreover, the launch of a digital platform for Indian languages will help students learn in their native languages, ensuring more inclusive and accessible education.
