Chhattisgarh Maoist Encounter: 8 Killed, Security Forces Seize Weapons

A fierce gunfight erupted in Chhattisgarh’s Dandakaranya region as security forces clashed with Maoists, killing at least eight. The operation, part of 'Kagar,' aims to dismantle insurgent networks.

  • Security forces engaged in a two-hour gunfight.
  • Eight Maoists killed, weapons recovered.
  • Key Maoist members surrendered in a separate incident.

In a high-stakes encounter deep within the forests of Chhattisgarh’s Dandakaranya region, security forces launched a major offensive against Maoist insurgents, resulting in the death of at least eight rebels. The fierce battle took place on Saturday in the Bijapur district’s Gangalur-Korcholi forest, following a tip-off about Maoist movements in the area.

A joint team comprising DRG, STF, Cobra 202, and CRPF 222 units was deployed for an extensive search operation. As they advanced, Maoists opened fire, triggering a two-hour-long gun battle with multiple rounds of firing. Once the gunfire subsided, security personnel took control of the area and recovered the bodies of eight Maoists along with a cache of weapons and supplies.

Ongoing Maoist Crackdown Under ‘Operation Kagar’

Authorities suspect that the actual death toll could be higher, estimating that at least 12 Maoists may have been killed. The encounter is part of ‘Operation Kagar,’ a large-scale security campaign aimed at dismantling Maoist strongholds in the region. Over the past few months, several top Maoist leaders have been eliminated, weakening the insurgent movement.

Maoist Leaders Surrender

Meanwhile, in a separate development, two key Maoist cadres have surrendered to authorities. Madiwi Ung alias Nagesh, a member of the Kalimela Area Committee, and Madkam Sukki alias Roshini, affiliated with the Cut-Off Area Committee, gave themselves up to the police in Bijapur. Officials believe their surrender signals internal cracks within the Maoist organization.

With security forces intensifying their operations, the Maoist insurgency in Chhattisgarh faces growing pressure, raising questions about the movement’s future.
