EC Gives Rahul Gandhi Ultimatum Over Allegations

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar challenged Rahul Gandhi’s allegations, demanding either an affidavit with proof or a public apology, stressing that unverified claims cannot undermine the credibility of the Election Commission.

  • CEC rejects Rahul Gandhi’s accusations
  • Affidavit or apology ultimatum issued
  • Duplicate voter card issue explained

The political atmosphere heated up after Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar strongly countered the allegations made by Congress leader and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi. Speaking to the media on Sunday, Kumar dismissed Gandhi’s claims as baseless, asserting that presenting a PowerPoint presentation without official data cannot be treated as truth. He demanded that Rahul Gandhi either submit an affidavit with evidence or tender an apology to the nation.

The CEC made it clear that there is no third option. He warned that if Rahul Gandhi fails to provide an affidavit within seven days, his accusations will be considered unfounded. Kumar further pointed out that certain individuals are deliberately misleading the public regarding the voter list revision process in Bihar under the “Sir” initiative. He emphasized that revising electoral rolls before every election is a legal responsibility of the Election Commission as mandated by the Representation of People Act.

Addressing concerns about duplicate voter ID cards, the CEC explained that duplication can occur in two ways. For example, one person in West Bengal and another in Haryana may end up with the same EPIC number. This issue, he noted, was first flagged in March 2025 and has since been addressed. Nearly three lakh duplicate EPIC numbers were identified nationwide, and corrective measures were taken.

Kumar also highlighted that prior to 2003, the Election Commission did not have a centralized digital database, leading to instances of multiple entries for individuals who had shifted residences. With the availability of modern technology and online systems today, such issues are being gradually resolved.

In conclusion, the CEC underlined that the Election Commission operates independently and lawfully. He reiterated that baseless allegations weaken public trust and urged political leaders to present verifiable proof before making such claims.
