  • 6 Days After Stampede, Another Incident in Tirupati

Hyderabad (Jan 13): Tirupati has witnessed yet another mishap within a week, causing concern among devotees. However, the relief is that this time there were no fatalities. On Monday afternoon, a fire accident occurred inside the premises of the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple. The incident took place at the temple’s 47th Laddu Distribution Counter, causing panic among visitors.

The temple administration acted swiftly to control the fire and prevent further damage. Currently, lakhs of devotees are visiting the temple daily to participate in the Vaikuntha Ekadashi celebrations and walk through the Vaikuntha Dwaram, a significant event that lasts for 10 days. Just six days ago, a tragic stampede occurred during ticket distribution for this event, resulting in six deaths.

What Caused the Fire?

The fire reportedly started due to a short circuit in the UPS system at the 47th Laddu Counter. Thick smoke began to spread quickly, creating panic among the devotees waiting in line for prasadam. Thankfully, the staff on duty acted immediately to control the flames, preventing a major disaster.

Devotees, who were standing in long queues for laddus, ran for safety as smoke filled the area. This created a tense atmosphere inside the temple for a while. Authorities have confirmed that the fire is now completely under control, and normalcy has been restored.

Stampede Tragedy That Claimed Six Lives

The Vaikuntha Dwaram at Tirupati Temple opened on January 10. However, before the grand Vaikuntha Ekadashi celebration could begin, a tragic incident took place. On Wednesday, a massive rush for tickets to the Vaikuntha Dwaram darshan led to a stampede, resulting in the deaths of six devotees.

Tirumala is known for attracting lakhs of devotees throughout the year, and Vaikuntha Ekadashi holds even greater importance for visitors. The large crowds often cause safety concerns, and the recent incidents have raised questions about crowd management at the temple.

Government Orders Judicial Inquiry

Following the fire incident and the earlier stampede, the Andhra Pradesh government has ordered a judicial inquiry. Two DCPs (Deputy Commissioners of Police) have been suspended in connection with the stampede tragedy. Additionally, the government has announced ₹25 lakh compensation for the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede.
