The first suspected death due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) has been reported in Solapur, Maharashtra, according to the state’s Health Department. The individual, who was working in Pune, had traveled back to their native district, Solapur, before succumbing to the condition. As of January 26, the total number of GBS cases in Pune district has risen to 101. Among these, 81 cases were reported in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 14 in Pimpri Chinchwad, and six from other parts of the district. The affected individuals include 68 males and 33 females, with 16 currently on ventilators, as per the Maharashtra Public Health Department. In response to the rising number of cases, the Health Department has issued a set of guidelines for local residents. These include recommendations to maintain good water quality by boiling water before drinking, ensuring food is fresh and clean, and avoiding cross-contamination between cooked and raw food. The department also urged the public not to panic, advising anyone experiencing symptoms to visit a government hospital promptly. GBS is a rare condition where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nerves. It typically starts with weakness or tingling in the hands and feet, which can escalate into paralysis. Common symptoms include sudden weakness or difficulty walking, along with prolonged diarrhea. Those affected often require hospital care. The state government has ramped up efforts to control the spread, with rapid response teams deployed to affected areas. Additionally, surveillance activities have been intensified by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and rural district authorities. Health officials have sent water samples from various locations in the city for chemical and biological analysis. As part of ongoing preventive measures, the state government has conducted house-to-house surveillance, with 25,578 homes in Pune district surveyed so far. While the exact cause of GBS remains unclear, the government is taking all necessary actions to curb its spread and provide care for those affected.
