The blaze, which started around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, quickly spread from the ground floor of a plastic mat shop to the upper levels of the building. Those who lost their lives include Madan Singh (38), his wife Sangeeta (33), their children Mitesh (7) and Vihaan (5), along with their neighbor Suresh Kumar (26). Madan Singh’s family, originally from Rajasthan, had been living in the building for over a decade while also running a small manufacturing unit producing plastic goods and steel utensils. While many other residents managed to escape, the family on the third floor was trapped when the fire engulfed the upper floors. Rescue efforts were hampered by the narrow space and unauthorized construction, which made access extremely difficult for firefighters. The building, constructed on a 30x40 site, reportedly had five to six floors—well above permissible limits. Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwara, who visited the accident site, confirmed that the structure violated building regulations. He also acknowledged that the congested layout and lack of fire-prevention measures worsened the disaster. The incident has sparked concerns over the growing number of unsafe and illegally constructed buildings in Bengaluru. Authorities have promised a thorough investigation and strict action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
